Why Pest Inspections Are Important
Pest insects and rodents have developed strong survival skills, and are experts at hiding, finding food, and staying alive in your home. They're also well-known for their ability to reproduce quickly, and can overrun a home.
Having routine pest inspections in your home catches these infestations early on -- before they become a health issue or lead to structural damages to your home.
How quickly do pest species reproduce? Check out the chart below for some examples:
Mice
Average litter Size: 8-12
Litter Frequency: Every 25 Days
Sexual Maturity At: 56 Days
Lifespan: 300 Days (9-12 months)
Mice most commonly infest a home as the weather gets colder, and are attracted to the building for its warmth, safety, food, and water source.
Mice will chew on electrical wires, presenting a very real fire hazard for homeowners.
Additionally, mice are carriers of many harmful forms of bacteria, viruses, and diseases. 10,000 humans are bitten by wild rodents in the United States each year.
Rats
Litter Size: 10
Litter Frequency: Every 23 Days
Sexual Maturity At: 90 Days
Lifespan: 540 Days (Up to 3 years)
Rats present a very real health risk, and are carriers of more than 35 known diseases, including hantavirus, pulmonary syndrome, rat bite fever, and even the plague. They are also carriers of many parasites, including fleas, ticks, mites, and ringworms.
These creatures are intelligent, resilient, and adaptable species who learn from their own mistakes, as well as others. This makes then an especially persistent pest to eliminate.
Formosan Subterranean Termites
Eggs Laid: 2,000*
Litter Frequency: Every Day
Number of Queens Per Colony: 1
Lifespan: 1,460 Days (workers)
The colony's queen can live for 15 years.
* The data for this number is based on a well-established Formosan subterranean termite colony that is more than one year old. First-year Formosan termite colonies reproduce at a much slower rate, as the queen is maturing. That being said, it is not uncommon for a colony to live in a home for many years, undetected by the homeowner or any other residents.
Bed Bugs
Eggs Laid: 12
Laying Frequency: Every Day
Sexual Maturity At: 21 Days
Lifespan: 240 Days (Up to 3 years)
Bed bugs are known to infest homes as "hitchhikers" that hide in clothing or luggage.
They're most commonly transferred in highly-trafficked areas such as hotel rooms, apartments and dorm rooms, as well as on public transit such as airplanes, buses, and trains. Bed bugs can cause powerful allergic reactions to individuals who are allergic, ranging in severity from swollen red bumps to insomnia and infections.
Cockroaches
The following three cockroach species are common in North American homes:
German Cockroaches
Eggs Laid: 30-48 Eggs per ootheca
Laying Frequency: Every 26 Days
Sexual Maturity At: 63 Days
Lifespan: 145-415 days
American Cockroaches
Eggs Laid: 5-50 Eggs per ootheca
Laying Frequency: Every 7 Days
Sexual Maturity At: 63 Days
Lifespan: At least 6 months; Up to 3 years in captivity
Oriental Cockroaches
